Our Talkbank members are a group of people who have experience of mental ill health (for example, bi-polar disorder, depression, schizophrenia) and who want to combat the ignorance and prejudice that surround mental ill health by interacting with the media.
Why talk to the media? People who experience mental distress tell of the discrimination they encounter. This discrimination can often be worse than the mental distress they are experiencing or have experienced.
The media is a powerful tool that can be used to shape public opinion and so help to eradicate the stigma and discrimination that surround mental distress.
Who can become a Talkbank member? Anyone who has experience of mental distress, whether first-hand or as a carer.
What can I talk about? Anything to do with mental distress! Maybe you want to talk about your experiences in a personal testimony, take part in a radio interview to promote a local mental health event, or write to a newspaper because you don't like the way a mental health issue has been reported.
I'd like to join but the prospect of talking to the media frightens me. We realise that talking to the media can be daunting, so you can become a Talkbank member just by coming along to our informal weekly meetings. If you then decide to, you can join the 7-week Talkbank Training Course where we'll teach you how to prepare for, and conduct yourself during, interviews. Many people who have spoken to the media have found it to be an empowering experience.
