about Local Peoples Local Lives

Local People Local Lives is an innovative anti-stigma campaign that is open to anyone with experience of mental ill health in the Stoke-on-Trent area. It aims to inform and educate the general public by dispelling stereotypical myths and challenging stigmatising perceptions about people with mental illness

As a project volunteer you can develop your own personal stories by using different media (e.g. leaflets, postcards, newsletters, e-books) to influence the general population of Stoke-on-Trent. Supported by a co-ordinator in an informal yet professional environment, volunteers first take part in a 6-week series of anti-stigma workshops, where they examine a variety of anti-stigma campaigns and cover topics such as self-stigma and the effects of labelling. Volunteers also assist in the design and layout of the publications, and help distribute them. The emphasis of Local People, Local Lives is that volunteers are very much individuals first, and that their diagnosis and experience of mental ill health are just one part of their lives.

Campaign members focus on shared interests and experiences, ensuring that the people of Stoke-on-Trent can relate to their subjects and identify with their stories. The example set by project members aims to combat prejudice, encourage the local community to be more open about their mental health, and make it easier for people to take steps to maintain good levels of mental wellbeing in their own lives without fear of discrimination. br/>
