The Media Action Group for Mental Health (MAGMH), established in 2000, is a Registered Charity that works to promote positive, accurate and realistic images of mental ill health and of people who live with mental distress. Our aim is to eradicate the stigma and discrimination that surround mental ill health.
The Media Action Group for Mental Health aims to eradicate the stigma of mental
ill health. By working in creative ways and utilising all media available we promote positive, accurate and realistic images of people who live with mental distress. We believe that through education and by empowering people to challenge society's misconceptions we can dismantle the barriers of prejudice and move towards mental and emotional
wellbeing.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 people will experience mental ill health at some point in their lives. The stigma attached to a diagnosis of mental illness has a negative impact on employability, income and access to services and social networks, and can lead to economic hardship and social exclusion. Negative public attitudes to mental illness adversely affect the physical and mental wellbeing of people living with mental ill health in the wider community. The ODPM Social Exclusion Report on Mental Health (2004) found that stigma and discrimination have a greater impact on people's lives than mental ill health. Eighty percent of those consulted said that the stigma surrounding the subject of mental illness was a priority area to be tackled, and more than half said that it was a barrier to employment and services
The Media Action Group believes that by challenging the ignorance and injustice that surround mental health issues we can significantly alter the way mental illness is understood at a local level, thereby improving the quality of life for one of the most disadvantaged groups in our society.
